JIU-KUI Liquor Store Identity Design: Calligraphic Spirit Meets Modern Geometry

JIU-KUI Brand Identity Design

Brand Naming & Philosophy

In East Asian culture, the character 魁 (Kui) signifies preeminence, mastery, and being the very best of its kind. When applied to wine and spirits, JIU-KUI (酒魁) evokes both an uncompromising eye for exceptional vintages and the uninhibited spirit of celebrated connoisseurs who savor life by the glass.

In crafting the visual identity for JIU-KUI Liquor Store, the objective was to bridge two distinct cultural dialogues: the unrestrained energy of oriental ink calligraphy, alongside the clean, witty geometry of contemporary Western typography.

1. The Calligraphic Signature: Spirit and Momentum

The first three lockups showcase bold, expressive cursive brushwork:

  • Calligraphic Rhythm: High-contrast strokes and fluid ink textures echo the spontaneous poetry of ancient banquet gatherings, projecting authenticity, heritage, and depth.
  • The Dry-Brush Circular Seal: A single circular brushstroke enfolds the logotype like a vintage bottle seal, embodying the rounded, balanced mouthfeel of an aged vintage.
  • Typographic Versatility: Paired with classical Roman serifs in horizontal layouts or arranged in a traditional vertical cadence, the identity adapts effortlessly across wooden presentation crates, storefront signboards, and bespoke label ribbons.

2. The Modern Monogram: A Clever Typographic Wine Glass

The bottom variation shifts gears completely, embracing international minimalism:

  • Stacked Grid Layout: The phonetic brand name is arranged in clean, geometric sans-serif capitals—J I U stacked neatly over K U I.
  • The Visual Pun: The soul of the design rests in the vertical alignment between rows: the letter U on the top row transforms seamlessly into the bowl of a tulip wine glass (holding a rich pour of deep burgundy wine), while the letter I directly beneath forms the slender stem and base.

This typographic subtlety transforms cold letterforms into an instant visual metaphor—a glass raised in quiet celebration.

3. A Dual Identity Strategy

Whether showcasing time-honored oriental spirits, single malts, or refined biodynamic wines, JIU-KUI’s visual identity moves effortlessly between classical heritage and urban sophistication.
